Gardening Tips
The Winter Gardener
by Michelle Somero
The gardens have been put to bed, herb bundles have been harvested and hung to dry, and seeds have been gathered. You may feel that gardening is over, but the gardener’s world is far from finished! Now comes the joy of preparing and dreaming of the seasons to come. Preparation is the key to extending your love of gardening throughout the next six months. There is a lot to do before the snow falls! A few preparation tips:
Gather leftover plant material for your craft making. Anything not touched by frost can still be harvested: Lavender, Thyme, Sage, etc. Harvest interesting seed heads for dried arrangements. Your harvest will come in handy for making Christmas gifts!
Harvest seeds. These seeds can be started in February in a moist growing mix provided with bottom heat. On top of a dryer works well. Cover your seed tray with plastic wrap or a clear plastic lid.
Spend some time in your garden this month. See if there is anything you wish to change next year. Jot down notes of areas that need dividing, or need more plants. Now is the easiest time to map out your garden on graph paper so that you can design in the winter. January is a good month to design your dream garden!
Purchase or bring in plants for indoors. My favorite herbs to enjoy in the winter are: Lavender, ‘Provence,’ ‘Goodwin Creek,’ Rosemary and Scented Geraniums. Give these plants less water and no fertilizer until March. Be sure to place them in your sunniest window and rub their leaves once in a while to remind yourself that there will be a world of green out there again soon!
